In 1922, 25 army officers were struggling to get insurance for their automobiles so they decided to take things into their own hands. They started USAA as a way to insure themselves. Now 91 years later they have grown to have millions of members and they now offer everything from insurance to banking products and even investments. USAA prides themselves on their initial values that they want to offer outstanding service, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.
Over the past few years many companies have faced financial headwinds, but not USAA. Year after year they continue to thrive, which allows them to spend more time helping their members instead of worrying about their bottom line.
Who Can Join USAA?
USAA is open to current and former military and their families. If you have never served there is no need to worry, because you can still get in on a majority of their products. You can take advantage of their investment products, checking and savings accounts, life insurance, credit cards and other shopping discounts. Only active and former military personel are eligible for auto and property insurance.

Thanks for this info, Sean – I never knew what the origination of USAA was! Question: when you say “military members and their families” what does “family” consist of? I.E. my dad was a Marine: which of his descendants can be members of USAA?
I am not 100%sure, but I would guess dependents only.
I’ve heard a lot about USAA, probably because they have been running TV ads recently. It seems like a great option for military members.
